I was thinking how do I go about writing my first blog? Will people read it? How do I make it interesting. And then it came to me; just tell them about yourself and what was the inspiration for Walking and Talking in the Park. Just be honest. Say it as it is.
Well here goes: A few months ago a series of unforeseen life changing events hit me quite hard. As a result I found myself in a depression and I isolated myself from the people around me, further compounding the situation.
Prescribed medication wasn't the solution as it provides only a temporary relief by suppressing the root cause of your problem just below the surface. It is also a law of diminishing returns because of long term dependency issues.
Then one day I just decided to go for a walk in my local park. It was a sunny, crisp winter's morning. Apart from the occasional jogger and dog walkers all I had for company were the Ducks, Squirrels and (very large) Canadian Geese. I gradually found that this simple activity cleared my head and gave me time to think positively by not dwelling on the past and constantly worrying about the future. In other words, I regained my perspective on life.
This proved to be a cathartic experience and gave me the inspiration for The Walking and Talking in the Park idea which I have now developed into a structured programme.
The idea is to get people fit by walking and also support mental fitness through the social aspect of this group activity.
The objective of this holistic approach is to improve the quality of life for socially isolated people within the local community.
It now only remains for me to approach local government agencies for funding and referrals.
I will keep you posted.
